.sa WHOIS Lookup: Records From Saudi Arabia
.sa is the country-code extension of Saudi Arabia, delegated into the root zone on 17 May 1994 and operated by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission. Queries are answered by whois.nic.net.sa on port 43. The extension has no registered RDAP endpoint, which makes port 43 the only channel for registration data, and the zone carries a DS record in the root.
In our measurement on 12 August 2026 the reply carried just four fields: the domain name, the registrant's name, the name servers and the DNSSEC state. No creation date, expiry date, last-changed date, registrar or status code appeared. The consequence is plain: WHOIS will not tell you how old a .sa address is, when its term ends, or which operations it is closed to. The registrant's name, by contrast, is open, and in the record we measured it arrived on a single line in both Latin and Arabic script.
Data that is not published is not data the registry lacks; the registry has chosen not to publish those fields, and the way to ask for them runs through its own channels. What is published earns its place: the registrant's name identifies the organisation behind the address, and the name server lines say who serves the zone. Why does a .sa WHOIS lookup show no dates?
Because the registry does not publish the date fields. In our measurement on 12 August 2026 the reply held no creation, expiry or last-changed line at all; the four fields returned were the domain name, the registrant, the name servers and the DNSSEC state. This is a publication choice rather than a query failure. Repeating the same query through a different tool changes nothing, because the scope at the source stays the same.
Does a .sa record show the registrant's name?
It does. In the record we measured the registrant line was populated, carrying the name in both Latin and Arabic script on the same line. That shows the extension keeps its identity side open: the masking practice that settled across generic extensions does not cover country extensions. Details such as address, phone and email are absent from the reply, so the name is the only identity data on offer.
How can the expiry date of a .sa address be found?
Not from the WHOIS reply, where that line does not exist. If you know the party managing the address, the date is a question for them; otherwise the registry's own channels are the route. Whether the name is in service can be seen through DNS instead: the name server lines are present in the reply, and they tell you whether the zone is being served. That still says nothing about when the term ends.
Is there an RDAP endpoint for the .sa extension?
There is not. In our measurement on 12 August 2026 IANA's bootstrap list carried no RDAP address for .sa, so no second channel exists. RDAP becoming the authoritative source for generic extensions does not extend to country extensions; each national registry decides on its own channel and its own publication scope. For registration data the single address is the server on port 43.
What does the DNSSEC line in a .sa record say?
It reports the signing state of the name you queried. In the record we measured that value was a signed delegation, meaning the registry held signing material for the name. The extension itself is signed as well: we confirmed a DS record for .sa in the root zone in the same measurement. With both in place, a chain of validation can be built from the root down to the address.
Why is there no status code in a .sa reply?
Status codes come from ICANN's EPP vocabulary and are expected in generic extensions; no such obligation binds country extensions. The .sa registry does not publish that field. In practice this means a WHOIS reply will not tell you whether an address is transfer-locked or protected against deletion. Information about locks has to come from the party managing the address.
