.ist is a generic extension opened in the name of a city; it entered the root zone on 29 May 2015 and is operated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Among the fifty-three extensions we measured, this is the only zone run by a local authority. Port 43 queries are answered by whois.nic.ist, which returned fifteen fields in our measurement on 12 August 2026, and an RDAP endpoint runs at rdap.identitydigital.services.

Who operates the .ist extension?
The zone is operated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, as the IANA root zone record states. Among the fifty-three extensions we measured, this is the only zone run by a local authority. Although the extension was opened in the name of a city, it belongs technically and contractually to the generic class; its record layout and status codes match other generic extensions.
Does a .ist WHOIS record show the domain holder?
It does not. In the record we measured there was no name, organisation or contact line for a registrant at registry level. What did appear plainly was the name of the registrar that sold the domain, its IANA number and an email address and phone number for abuse reports. Where identity is needed, approaching that registrar is the step that works; for abuse reports the address in the reply is already enough.
Does a .ist record carry creation and expiry dates?
It does. The reply holds the creation date, the last modification and the expiry date in UTC, and the same three values arrive as events on the RDAP side. Our result screen derives the domain's age and its remaining term from them. As the term runs short we turn the indicator to a warning colour, so the renewal window is hard to miss.
Which channel answers a .ist lookup?

Is DNSSEC available on .ist addresses?
At the level of the extension, yes: the .ist zone holds a DS record in the root, which we verified during the measurement. For an individual address the DNSSEC line in the reply is what to read — signed when a DS record has been published for that name, unsigned when it has not. We show the two separately, because a signed zone does not make your own address signed.
How does an available .ist name appear in a lookup?
Query a name nobody holds and no registration fields arrive at all; the reply reports the name as available. We keep such a result for five minutes only and registered ones for six hours, the short window being there because a name that looks free can be taken quickly.
