.pt WHOIS RECORD

.pt WHOIS Lookup: Portugal Domain Name Records

.pt is the country-code domain extension of Portugal. It was delegated into the root zone on 30 June 1988 and is administered by Associação DNS.PT. WHOIS queries go to the server at whois.dns.pt on port 43, and since the extension has no registered RDAP endpoint, that is the only channel for registration data. The zone carries a DS record in the root, which means it is signed with DNSSEC.

In our measurement on 12 August 2026, a .pt query returned seventeen fields. The reply holds the domain name itself, a status line stating that the record is registered, the creation and expiry dates, the name servers and two contact blocks. The first block belongs to the owner and carries a name, street address, locality, postal code and country code; the second gives administrative details in the same shape. Phone numbers, email addresses and the EPP status codes familiar from generic extensions are not published here.

An openly published owner name is common among country extensions: the masking obligation applied across generic extensions since 2018 does not cover them, and each registry decides its own publication scope. Run a .pt lookup and compare the owner block with the administrative one. For the neighbouring extension on the same peninsula, see .es WHOIS lookup; for another that publishes the registrant just as openly, .cl WHOIS lookup.

WHOIS FAQ

How is a .pt WHOIS lookup carried out?

Type the .pt address you want to check and start the search. The query is sent to the Portuguese registry's server at whois.dns.pt on port 43, and the reply comes back from there. Because the extension has no registered RDAP endpoint, there is no second channel. The registry decides the scope of the reply; a lookup tool only presents the record it receives in readable form, adding and removing nothing.

Can the owner of a .pt domain name be identified?

Yes. In our measurement on 12 August 2026 the reply openly carried the owner's name, street address, locality, postal code and country code. The masking obligation applied across generic extensions since 2018 does not cover country extensions, which is why the Portuguese registry continues to publish identity data. Phone numbers and email addresses, however, do not appear in the reply.

Are the creation and expiry dates visible for .pt domains?

Both are visible. In the record we measured, creation read 09/01/2003 and expiry 28/02/2027 23:59. Dates are written day/month/year, so the first value is 9 January 2003. The 28 in the expiry line confirms that order, since 28 cannot be a month. The time on the expiry line shows that the term runs to the end of the day.

Which organisation administers the .pt extension?

The extension is administered by Associação DNS.PT. IANA's root zone record names that organisation as the sponsor, and the extension entered the root zone on 30 June 1988. The same organisation provides the WHOIS service, with queries going to the server at whois.dns.pt. Domains themselves are registered through registrars accredited by the registry, and the administrative block in a reply usually carries that company's details.

Does a .pt WHOIS reply include a phone number or email?

No. In the record we measured, neither the owner block nor the administrative block carried a phone or email line; what was open was the name and the postal address. The practical consequence is that the record tells you who is responsible without giving you an address to write to. Where contact is needed, the route runs through the organisation named in the administrative block.

Can an RDAP query be made in the .pt extension?

It cannot. In our measurement on 12 August 2026 IANA's bootstrap list carried no RDAP address for .pt. Registration data comes only from the WHOIS server on port 43. RDAP becoming the authoritative source for generic extensions does not bind country extensions, and many national extensions in Europe carry on with plain-text WHOIS.
