.es WHOIS Lookup: Red.es and Query Access
.es is Spain's country code extension, delegated into the root zone on 14 April 1988, with the public body Red.es responsible for the zone. Queries go to whois.nic.es, but the service is not open to everyone: in our measurement on 12 August 2026 the server returned its conditions of use instead of registration data. The text states it plainly — access is enabled only for IP addresses authorised by Red.es, and a maximum of one address per user or organisation is permitted.
Asked through an authorised path, the record that comes back is narrow. In our measurement a registered .es address returned three things: the domain name itself, a status line reporting that it is taken, and its name servers. No creation date, no expiry date, no registrar and no holder details appear at all. WHOIS here answers a question of existence and routing — is the name registered, where does it resolve — and says nothing about the record's history or the party behind it.
That access model also shapes the availability question. Query a name that is not registered and the server returns no record; the reply is once again the conditions text. So a name cannot be safely declared free on this channel — an absent record can mean either availability or a closed door. IANA's RDAP bootstrap registry defines no endpoint for .es either. Who is allowed to query the .es WHOIS service?
Only IP addresses authorised in advance by Red.es. In the 12 August 2026 measurement the server answered a query from an unauthorised address with its conditions of use rather than a record; the text states that access is enabled for authorised addresses and that one address per user or organisation is permitted. There is, in other words, no publicly open port 43 service for .es — the restriction is a deliberate access policy, not a fault.
Which fields come back in a .es record?
Three things: the domain name itself, a status line reporting that it is taken, and its name servers. In our measurement that was the whole of the reply for a registered .es address. Creation date, expiry date, registrar and holder lines are absent entirely. WHOIS here answers a question of existence and routing — whether the name is registered and where it resolves. The record's history and the party behind it belong to another channel.
Can the holder of a .es domain be identified through WHOIS?
No. The reply carries no name, organisation, address or email for the holder, and no field naming the registrar either. That does not mean the data does not exist — the registry holds it and does not publish it on this channel. If you have a legal reason concerning a .es address, the route runs through the registrar that manages the domain.
Where can the creation and expiry dates of a .es address be found?
Not in WHOIS, because the reply carries no date field at all. IANA's RDAP bootstrap registry defines no endpoint for .es either, so there is no second machine-readable channel. If you need to track the term of a .es address, your registrar's own record is the only reliable source, and renewal warnings come from there as well.
If a query returns nothing, is the .es name free?
You cannot tell from that alone. An unregistered name produces no record, but so does a query arriving from an address the service does not serve. Because nothing in the reply separates the two cases, resting an availability decision for .es on WHOIS output can lead you wrong. Where certainty matters, a check through your own registrar is the more reliable route.
Does the .es extension support DNSSEC?
It does. A DS record for .es is present in the root zone, which we verified in the 12 August 2026 measurement, so the zone is signed. That fact is independent of WHOIS access; a signed zone does not make the addresses under it signed. The DNSSEC status of an individual address is visible through a DNS query, which the DNS tab on the result screen performs.
With WHOIS this narrow, what can be learned about a .es address?
Everything on the technical side, because DNS is public. The DNS tab on the result screen resolves and displays the name server records, the A and AAAA addresses, and the MX and TXT records without asking the registry. That shows where an address is hosted, who carries its mail and whether DNSSEC is switched on. The identity of the holder is not available on that channel either.
