.it WHOIS Lookup: Registration Dates and Blocks
.it is Italy's country code extension, delegated into the root zone on 23 December 1987 and operated by the IIT institute of the National Research Council. Queries are answered on port 43 by whois.nic.it. In our measurement on 12 August 2026 the reply carried eleven fields, and the registry opens with a notice: this output may be a subset of the data held in the database, and its own web interface should be used for the whole record.
The body of the record holds three dates at once: creation, last update and expiry. Beside them sits a separate field named Signed, saying in a single word whether the domain is signed with DNSSEC — in the record we measured the answer was no. The status line comes from the registry's own vocabulary; it is not an equivalent of the EPP codes used by generic extensions and is summed up in one word.
The contact side is unusually open here. In the record we measured, the registrant block carried an organisation name and a full address, while the admin contact block showed an actual person's name. Each block also carries its own creation and update timestamps, so you can see separately when a contact record changed. Does a .it WHOIS record show the holder of the domain?
In the record we measured it did. The registrant block carried the organisation's name and its full address, and the admin contact block held an actual person's name. This is one of the extensions where contact data can be found inside the reply. Do not expect the same openness on records held by natural persons; data protection rules work differently on personal registrations.
What does the Signed field in a .it reply describe?
It says in one word whether the domain you queried is signed with DNSSEC; in the record we measured the answer was no. The extension itself is a separate matter: the .it zone holds a DS record in the root and is signed. Whether an individual address is signed depends on a setting made at the registrar managing it, and can be verified independently through DNS.
What does the notice at the head of a .it record mean?
The registry states that the output returned on port 43 may be a subset of the data held in the database, and names its own web interface for the complete record. So the fields you see are accurate, but they may not be all of them. Reading the output as complete without noticing that line leads to wrong conclusions — particularly when you are tracing every contact role attached to a domain.
Does a .it record carry creation and expiry dates?
It does. The reply gives the creation date in Created, the last modification in Last Update and the end of the term in Expire Date; the record we measured was opened in 1999 with an expiry date in 2027. The dates arrive as day and time separated by hyphens. Our result screen derives the domain's age and its remaining term from those three values.
What do the dates inside .it contact blocks show?
Each contact block carries its own creation and last-update timestamps, kept separate from the dates of the domain. In the record we measured, the registrant block and the admin block carried different dates. The practical use is this: a contact record can have been updated even where the domain record has not moved at all, and you see which changed when without cross-referencing anything.
Is the status line in a .it record an EPP code?
It is not. The status line comes from the registry's own vocabulary and carried a single-word value in the record we measured. In generic extensions the same line holds codes such as clientTransferProhibited, each with an entry in ICANN's shared dictionary. Do not look for that mapping under .it: the status is a summary and does not name the individual operations that are blocked.
Can .it registration data be queried over RDAP?
No. IANA's RDAP bootstrap registry defines no endpoint for .it, which our measurement confirmed. Since 28 January 2025 RDAP has been the definitive source for generic extensions, but country code extensions fall outside that arrangement. So the port 43 WHOIS service is the only machine-readable source for .it registration data, and it answers in plain text.
How does an available .it name appear in a lookup?
Query a name nobody holds and the registry reports the name as available, with no dates, no status and no contact block. That means the name looks free to register. We keep such a result for five minutes only and registered ones for six hours, the short window being there because a name that looks free can be taken quickly.
