.fr WHOIS Lookup: AFNIC Records and Status Lines
.fr is France's country code extension, delegated into the root zone on 2 September 1986 and operated by AFNIC, a non-profit. Queries are answered on port 43 by whois.nic.fr, and the reply is among the most detailed in Europe: our measurement on 12 August 2026 returned thirty-three distinct labels. The registry explains its own date format at the head of the reply, and an RDAP endpoint runs at rdap.nic.fr.
Status arrives in two vocabularies at once. On one side is AFNIC's own status field, which in the record we measured meant active. On the other is a separate eppstatus field carrying exactly the codes used by generic extensions — the record held four locks, all with the server prefix. A hold line adds a third angle, saying in one word whether the domain has been technically suspended.
The holder appears as a handle, and the handle is resolved further into the reply: contact type, organisation or person name, address, country, phone and email. In the corporate record we measured every one of those lines was readable. Each contact block also carries an anonymous line stating whether that contact was closed at the holder's request. Does a .fr WHOIS record show the holder's name?
In the corporate record we measured it did. The holder appears first as a handle, and that handle is then resolved in a block of its own: contact type, organisation name, address, country, phone and email. Inside the block an anonymous line states whether the contact was closed at the holder's request. On records held by natural persons that line may read differently and the contact details may not be opened.
What is the difference between status and eppstatus under .fr?
The status field belongs to AFNIC's own vocabulary and sums up the domain's general state in a single word. eppstatus comes from the shared code set used by generic extensions; the record we measured carried four locks, all with the server prefix, meaning update, transfer, deletion and recovery were closed at registry level. The two are meant to be read together: the first summarises, the second names each blocked operation.
What does the reachstatus line in a .fr reply mean?
It shows whether the holder's contact details have been verified. In the record we measured the value was positive, and three further lines stood beside it: the medium used for the check, who carried it out and on what date. No other extension publishes fields like these. The practical value is direct — the email address in the record has been tested at least once, and the date tells you how old that test is.
What does the hold line report in a .fr record?
It reports in one word whether the domain has been technically suspended; in the record we measured the value was negative, so no suspension was in place. On a suspended name resolution stops and the address does not work — a different situation from the lock codes, because locks block operations while a hold takes the name itself off the air. If a .fr address fails to resolve, this is one of the first lines to check.
Does a .fr record carry creation and expiry dates?
It does. The reply gives the creation date in created, the end of the term in Expiry Date and the last modification in last-update; the registry states its date format at the head of the reply and the values arrive to the second. The record we measured was opened in 2000. Our result screen derives the domain's age and its remaining term from those three values.
Is there an RDAP endpoint for .fr, and what does it give?
There is: IANA's bootstrap registry routes .fr queries to rdap.nic.fr, and that endpoint answered in our measurement. The RDAP reply lists registrant, admin, technical contact and registrar as separate entities, with registration, expiry and last change among its events. Taking the same record as JSON is safer for automated systems than parsing plain text, while the scope of the two channels is comparable.
What are the handle numbers in a .fr record for?
A handle is the identifier of a person or organisation record in AFNIC's database, ending with the registry's own suffix. In the record we measured the holder, the admin contact and the technical contact each carried a separate number. Where the same number turns up on another .fr address, both addresses hang on one contact record. That is a far more reliable link than comparing similar names.
How does an available .fr name appear in a lookup?
Query a name nobody holds and AFNIC reports that no match was found, with none of the thirty-three fields present. That means the name looks free to register. We keep such a result for five minutes only and registered ones for six hours, the short window being there because a name that looks free can be taken quickly.
