.au is Australia's country code extension, delegated into the root zone on 5 March 1986 and administered by auDA. Port 43 queries are answered by whois.auda.org.au, and an RDAP endpoint runs at rdap.cctld.au. In our measurement on 12 August 2026 the port 43 reply carried twenty-one fields, and the zone held a DS record in the root.
The three most distinctive fields concern eligibility: the type of basis the registration rests on, the name it was granted under and the identifier of that basis. Holding a .au address in Australia depends on a defined connection, and auDA keeps the record of that condition inside the registration itself. Beside the status line sits a status reason field, stating in its own words why the status holds — the only registry among those we measured that does this.
The date side, by contrast, is thin: neither a creation nor an expiry date appears in the reply, only the time of the last modification. The RDAP endpoint behaves the same way, its event list holding nothing but the last change. So the age of a .au address, or when it runs out, cannot be learned on any channel. On the contact side the registrant and the technical contact each appear as an identifier and a name. Why are creation and expiry dates missing from .au records?
Because auDA does not publish either field. In the 12 August 2026 measurement the port 43 reply held only the time of the last modification, and the RDAP endpoint's event list contained nothing else either. That means the age of a .au address, and the day it runs out, cannot be established from registration data. If you need to track the term, your registrar's own record is the only source.
What do the eligibility fields in a .au record say?
They say on what basis the registration was opened: the type of that basis, its name and its identifier arrive on separate lines. Holding a .au address in Australia depends on a defined connection, and the registry keeps the record of that condition inside the registration. The grounds behind an address therefore become visible without filing a separate request. Registration rules themselves are handled by the registrar; WHOIS only shows the outcome.
What is the status reason field in a .au reply for?
It states in a field of its own why the status holds the value it does. Most registries write only the status and leave the cause unsaid; auDA gives both. When a .au address turns up in a state you did not expect, you read this line instead of guessing. Among the extensions we measured, this is the only registry publishing a status reason as a separate field.
Does a .au record show the holder's name?
The registrant appears as an identifier and a name, and the technical contact uses the same pair. Address, phone and email lines are not in the reply, so what you would need in order to make contact does not arrive on this channel. For reporting abuse, however, the registrar's email address and phone number are stated plainly — that is the route to take.
What does the RDAP endpoint give for .au?
The rdap.cctld.au endpoint returns the same record as JSON, but in our measurement the only role present was the registrar and the event list held nothing but the last change. The RDAP side is therefore a narrower slice than the port 43 reply, with no eligibility fields. Our result screen reads the RDAP channel for this extension, so the screen shows the registrar, the name servers, the status and the time of the last change.
Are name servers included in .au WHOIS output?
They are. The reply lists the servers resolving the domain on separate lines, and privacy rules do not touch them. A DNSSEC field is present too, reporting whether the name you queried is signed. The extension itself holds a DS record in the root; a signed zone does not make the individual addresses under it signed.
What is the reseller field beside the registrar in a .au record?
The reply carries a reseller name field alongside the registrar's own name. It marks the cases where the party that sold the name is not the registrar itself: the registrar holds the contract with the registry, while the reseller serves the end customer. The distinction helps when deciding whom to approach with a problem, because the party able to change the record at the registry is the registrar.
How does an available .au name appear in a lookup?
Query a name nobody holds and no fields arrive at all; the reply reports the name as available. We keep such a result for five minutes only, because a name that looks free can be taken quickly, while results for registered names are kept for six hours.
