.site is one of the generic extensions born of the 2012 application round; it entered the root zone on 6 March 2015 and is operated by Radix. Port 43 queries are answered by whois.nic.site, and an RDAP endpoint runs at rdap.radix.host. In our measurement on 12 August 2026 the reply carried fourteen fields. The zone holds a DS record in the root.
The three dates in that reply answer three different questions, and confusing them is a common mistake. The creation date says when the name was first taken and never moves. The expiry date marks the end of the paid term and moves forward on renewal. The updated date shows only when the record was last edited: a name server change, a lock being added or a correction made at the registrar all push it forward. In the record we measured, the updated date fell eleven years after the creation date.
The practical consequence is this: you cannot tell from the updated date whether an address has changed hands. That timestamp may mark a transfer, or it may mark a single name server fix — the record carries no field separating the two. What does the updated date in a .site record show?
It shows when the record was last edited, not what changed in it. A name server change, an added lock or a correction made at the registrar all push that date forward. In the record we measured the updated date fell years after the creation date. Reading it as evidence that an address changed hands therefore leads you wrong: the record carries no field naming the type of change.
Can the age of a .site domain be calculated from WHOIS?
It can. The creation date arrives in Creation Date in UTC and to the second; that value marks when the name was first taken and does not move on renewal. Our result screen derives the domain's age from it and shows the remaining term from the expiry date separately. The two must not be mixed: age comes from creation, remaining term from expiry.
Is the .site expiry date the day the name really ends?
The expiry date marks the end of the paid term as held at the registry. Your own contract with the registrar and its renewal window can differ, and there are periods after expiry in which a name is not yet released. Read the date as a warning rather than a deadline, and confirm the exact day from your registrar's own record.
Does a .site WHOIS lookup show the domain holder?
It does not. The schema of this extension defines no field for a registrant, an admin or a technical contact, and no such line appeared in the record we measured. What the reply does carry plainly is the name of the registrar that sold the domain, its IANA number and an email address and phone number for abuse reports. Where identity is needed, approaching that registrar is the step that works.
What does the RDAP endpoint give for .site?
The rdap.radix.host endpoint returns the same record as JSON; in our measurement the only role was the registrar and the events amounted to registration, expiry and last change. The scope therefore matches the port 43 reply. The benefit of RDAP here is form: field positions are fixed, so parsing does not break when the registry changes its text template.
How does an available .site name appear in a lookup?
Query a name nobody holds and the registry reports that no match was found, with none of the fourteen fields present. That means the name looks free to register. We keep such a result for five minutes only and registered ones for six hours, the short window being there because a name that looks free can be taken quickly.
