.eu WHOIS Lookup: EURid Records and Privacy
.eu is the regional extension of the European Union, delegated into the root zone on 28 April 2005 and operated by EURid vzw, based in Belgium. Queries are answered on port 43 by whois.eu. In our measurement on 12 August 2026 the reply returned eighteen labels, arriving as headed blocks: registrant, technical contact, registrar, name servers and keys.
The registrant block is closed with a single line stating that the details are not disclosed, and pointing to the registry's own web interface. The technical block, by contrast, is open — organisation, correspondence language and email address were all readable. That language field is a practical detail in a region with more than twenty official languages: reporting a problem, you know in advance which language the other side will answer in.
The reply holds no creation date, no update date and no expiry date; those three fields are not published for .eu at all. What it does carry is the name servers listed with their IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, and the zone's DNSSEC key printed with its flags, protocol, algorithm and the public key itself. Why is the registrant missing from a .eu WHOIS lookup?
Because EURid closes the registrant block with a single notice: it states that the details are not disclosed and points to its own web-based interface for queries. In the record we measured that block held no name, address or phone line at all. The technical block was open, though; if you need to report a problem, the email address there is the route that works, while the identity question is not answered on this channel.
Where can the creation and expiry dates of a .eu domain be found?
Not in WHOIS. In the 12 August 2026 measurement the reply held no creation date, no update date and no expiry date; EURid publishes none of the three. IANA's RDAP bootstrap registry defines no endpoint for .eu either, so there is no second machine-readable channel. If you need to track the term of a .eu address, your registrar's own record is the only reliable source.
What is the language field in a .eu record for?
The technical contact block carries a field naming the correspondence language; in the record we measured its value was English. In a region with more than twenty official languages that is genuinely practical: reporting abuse or a configuration fault, you know from the outset which language to write in. The field does not exist in the generic template, and it is one of the details worth not overlooking when reading a .eu record.
Why are IP addresses printed next to .eu name servers?
The registry lists name servers not by host name alone but with their IPv4 and IPv6 addresses; in the record we measured a single server appeared on two lines with two different addresses. That shows at a glance that the server is reachable over both protocols. Generic extensions carry only the host name, leaving you to resolve the addresses separately; under .eu that step is unnecessary.
What is the keys block in a .eu WHOIS reply?
That block carries the domain's DNSSEC public key: the flags, the protocol number, the signing algorithm and the key itself, printed in full. It lets you see whether the address is signed without running a separate DNS query. The key is not secret data — every validating resolver reads it anyway. EURid putting it in the reply is a deliberate choice to keep technical data open.
Can .eu registration data be queried over RDAP?
No. IANA's RDAP bootstrap registry defines no endpoint for .eu, which our measurement confirmed. Since 28 January 2025 RDAP has been the definitive source for generic extensions; .eu, however, is a regional extension in the country code class and falls outside that arrangement. The port 43 WHOIS service is the only machine-readable way to its registration data.
Why are there no status codes in a .eu record?
The reply carries no EPP status codes; our measurement found no such field. Those codes are a requirement of the ICANN contracts binding generic extensions, whereas EURid uses a layout of its own and does not report status in a dedicated field. In practice this means WHOIS will not tell you whether a .eu address carries a transfer or deletion lock — that information sits with the registrar.
How does an available .eu name appear in a lookup?
Query a name nobody holds and none of the blocks arrive; the reply reports the name as available. We keep such a result for five minutes only, because a name that looks free can be taken quickly, while results for registered names are kept for six hours.
