.show WHOIS Lookup: Records in an Event Extension
.show is a generic extension delegated into the root zone on 9 April 2015; IANA's record names Binky Moon, LLC as the contract holder and leaves the WHOIS server field empty. In our measurement on 12 August 2026, port 43 returned no registration data. Queries are answered by the RDAP endpoint at rdap.identitydigital.services, and the zone carries a DS record in the root.
In our measurement on 12 August 2026 the registration data came from the RDAP endpoint. The reply carried the creation and expiry dates, the time of the last change, the registrar, the status codes, the name servers and the DNSSEC state. Dates are listed here as separate event records, each labelled with its own type, so you never have to guess which date belongs to what. Our result screen fills eight fields from that reply.
There is no registrant line; the only role in the reply is the registrar. Across generic extensions the contact data of natural persons has been published in masked form since 25 May 2018, so the counterpart for questions of identity is the company that sold the name. What does a .show WHOIS lookup show?
Eight fields were populated in our measurement: the domain name, the creation date, the updated date, the expiry date, the registrar, the name servers, the status codes and the DNSSEC state. The data comes from the registry's RDAP endpoint, since this extension runs no WHOIS service on port 43. No registrant name or contact line appears in the reply at all.
Which dates does the .show event list contain?
In the record we measured, registration was dated 2 March 2015 and expiry 2 March 2027, accompanied by the time of the last change to the record and the registry database stamp. Each event carries its own type as a label, so you never have to guess which date belongs to what. Our result screen places these dates in their own fields and works out the time remaining.
What does an older WHOIS tool do with a .show query?
A tool that only connects to port 43 has no address to work with here: IANA's .show record lists no WHOIS server, and our measurement on 12 August 2026 returned nothing from that port. The result is usually an empty reply or an error line, and some tools read that as the name being available. Our lookup recognises the extension and goes to the RDAP endpoint, so that misreading does not arise.
What does a .show record give about the registrant?
Nothing at the level of a name or a contact line. In the 13 August 2026 measurement the reply listed the registrar role only; no block was opened for the registrant at all. Across generic extensions, contact data belonging to natural persons has been published in masked form since 25 May 2018. What the record does tell you is whose system the name sits in, and that company is the counterpart for questions of identity.
Why does an RDAP reply show no empty fields at all?
Because RDAP does not print fields from a fixed template; a reply carries only the objects that exist. In plain-text WHOIS a label is always printed and stays blank when there is no value, and that blank reads sometimes as privacy and sometimes as missing data. RDAP removes the ambiguity: no object means there is no event to report. Closed personal fields are a separate mechanism with its own signals.
Why is there no transfer event in the .show record?
Because no such event had happened by the time of the measurement. The record we read on 13 August 2026 held four events and a transfer was not among them, while the sibling extensions answered by the same endpoint did carry one on their own names. The difference comes from the history of that particular name, not from a rule of the extension. A transfer event is added only when a name moves from one registrar to another.
