.biz WHOIS Lookup: Open Fields and Closed Lines
.biz entered the root zone on 26 June 2001 and is classified in the IANA record as a restricted generic extension; it is operated by Registry Services, LLC. Port 43 queries are answered by whois.nic.biz and RDAP queries by rdap.nic.biz. In our measurement on 12 August 2026 the port 43 reply carried fifty-four field labels, and the zone held a DS record in the root.
On the port 43 side the identity lines had turned into REDACTED FOR PRIVACY — the internal record identifier included. In the record we measured, only the registrant's organisation, state and country escaped. The fields survive while their contents are emptied, which is exactly why a common parsing error takes the privacy phrase for an identity value and stores it as one.
On the RDAP side the picture looks different. Asked for the same record, the endpoint listed three entities — registrant, technical contact and registrar — so the existence of those roles is stated plainly. The name field of the registrant and the technical contact still came back empty, though, with only the state surviving from the address. Having the role list open is a genuinely useful difference for anyone reading one record through both channels. What does REDACTED FOR PRIVACY mean in a .biz record?
It means the registry kept the line in the reply and emptied its value on privacy grounds. In the record we measured, the name, street, phone and email lines carried the phrase, and so did the internal record identifier. A filled-looking field does not mean open data: the phrase is not a value but an explanation of why the value is missing. The organisation, state and country lines, by contrast, were readable in our measurement.
Does RDAP give more than WHOIS for a .biz domain?
Not in scope, but in structure. In our measurement the RDAP reply listed three entities separately: registrant, technical contact and registrar. That is how you learn the roles are defined, although the name field of the first two comes back empty. Identity data is closed on both channels; the difference is that RDAP states the role structure plainly and returns JSON, which makes parsing safer in automated systems.
How can the holder of a .biz domain be reached?
The holder's own contact lines are closed on both channels, so no direct address is available. The party that does arrive open is the registrar: its name, its WHOIS server and an email address and phone number for abuse reports are all in the reply. With a legitimate reason, the working step is to approach the registrar through that channel; it weighs the request against its own rules and data protection law.
Is .biz a restricted extension, and does WHOIS show it?
The IANA record classifies .biz as a restricted generic extension, and that classification comes from the root zone entry. The WHOIS reply carries no separate field stating the restriction — its layout follows the same template as other generic extensions. The restriction concerns registration and is handled through the registrar; on the query side there is no extra condition and no obstacle.
Does a .biz record show creation and expiry dates?
It does, and redaction does not touch them. The reply gives the creation date in Creation Date, the last modification in Updated Date and the end of the term in Registry Expiry Date, all in UTC; the record we measured was opened in 2002. The same three values arrive as event records on the RDAP side. Our result screen derives the domain's age and its remaining term from them.
Who set the status codes in a .biz record, and can they be lifted?
The record we measured carried three codes, all prefixed client: the deletion, transfer and update locks had been set by the registrar managing the name. That same registrar lifts them at the holder's request. Codes prefixed server are set by the registry and lie beyond the registrar's authority. Because the codes come from ICANN's shared vocabulary, their meaning does not shift from one extension to another.
Is DNSSEC available on .biz addresses?
At the level of the extension, yes: the .biz zone holds a DS record in the root, which we verified during the measurement. For an individual address the DNSSEC line in the reply is what to read — signed when a DS record has been published for that name, unsigned when it has not. The two facts are separate, and we show them separately on the result screen so a signed zone is never mistaken for a signed address.
How does an available .biz name appear in a lookup?
Query a name nobody holds and the registry reports that no match was found; no dates, no registrar and no privacy lines arrive. That means the name looks free to register. We keep such a result for five minutes, and results for registered names for six hours.
